Standing Together: Basmeh & Zeitooneh’s Response to the Crisis in Lebanon

As Lebanon faces one of the most difficult times in its recent history, the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate, and the human cost of displacement is rising every day. The relentless violence has forced nearly one million people to flee their homes, seeking shelter in neighboring cities, villages, and countries. In the midst of this upheaval, Basmeh & Zeitooneh has been on the front lines, responding to the urgent needs of those affected by this crisis.

Since day one of the escalation, our team in Lebanon has mobilized, working tirelessly to provide immediate relief to displaced families. From Beirut to Tripoli, Sidon, Akkar, Beqaa, and Chouf, we have extended our support to 2084 families until today, the 07th of October, 2024, and continue to reach more every day. Whether it's providing shelter, food, or hygiene kits, our mission is clear: to offer as much comfort and relief as possible to those whose lives have been upended by the conflict.

Reaching Those Left Behind

Despite the mass displacement from cities in southern Lebanon, many people remain in their homes or have sought refuge in local shelters. In coordination with the municipality of Nabatieh, we discovered that 1,000 people are currently staying in two local shelters, while others have chosen not to leave their homes despite the dangers. Today, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our team, we were able to meet a portion of their needs by delivering essential supplies from Sidon.

The local connection has been key in our ability to provide timely aid. Without the cooperation of municipalities, local organizations, and our incredible volunteers, we would not have been able to mobilize this quickly. Our efforts are a testament to the strength of community-based action in times of crisis. When we all work together—across regions and borders—we can create a real impact, despite the enormous challenges we face.

The Challenges We Face

The sheer scale of the displacement and destruction has created an overwhelming demand for aid, and it shows no signs of stopping. The violence continues to spread, and with it, the suffering of countless individuals and families. Our work is far from over. As we continue to respond, we face logistical challenges, including accessing hard-to-reach areas, securing enough resources, and coordinating relief efforts across a fragmented and unstable landscape.

Many families are enduring unimaginable hardship. The trauma of displacement, coupled with the lack of basic necessities, is taking a heavy toll, especially on children. In the shelters we visit, we hear stories of fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty. Despite these hardships, the resilience of the people is inspiring, and we remain committed to standing with them through this crisis.
