Study | Displacement & Disillusionment: Documenting Social Tension and the Reframing of Return Dynamics in Lebanon

Focusing on everyday realities in mixed-population areas, the research examines the interactions between three groups living under shared pressure: economically vulnerable Lebanese host communities, long-settled refugees, and newly arrived displaced individuals. The study draws on focus group discussions and key informant interviews, using a participatory and gender-sensitive approach, with findings further validated through community workshops to ensure strong alignment with lived experiences.

Findings show that tensions stem less from identity differences and more from uncertainty, shrinking support, and perceived inequality in aid distribution, creating a growing “fairness gap”. Despite assumptions, newly arrived displaced individuals are among the most excluded due to documentation barriers and fear of accessing services.
