Beirut, Lebanon – 17 April 2026
Basmeh & Zeitooneh welcomes the current temporary ceasefire as a critical moment of reduced hostilities. However, the organization stresses that this pause in violence remains fragile and uncertain, with no clear indication of how long it will hold or what will happen after the deadline.
While the ceasefire offers a brief respite, it does not mark the end of suffering for civilians across Lebanon. The obligation to protect civilians under international humanitarian law remains absolute before, during, and after active conflict. Basmeh & Zeitooneh underscore that safeguarding lives, civilian infrastructure, and essential services must continue to be a priority throughout this period.
Despite the relative calm, displacement persists. Many families are still unable or afraid to return to their homes. For those who have managed to momentarily go back, conditions are often unlivable. Homes have been damaged or destroyed, and basic necessities such as food, clean water, and electricity remain inaccessible. Ongoing security risks further prevent communities from resettling safely.
“The ceasefire has not translated into safety or stability for thousands of families,” said Marianne Samaha, Head of Program Development and Partnerships at Basmeh & Zeitooneh. “Displacement is ongoing, and the humanitarian needs remain acute. A pause in violence must not be mistaken for a resolution or for recovery.”
Basmeh & Zeitooneh calls on the public and the international community to maintain focused attention on the situation in Lebanon. Humanitarian needs remain urgent, and sustained support is essential to ensure that vulnerable populations are not overlooked during this uncertain period.
The organization also reiterates the importance of unimpeded humanitarian access to affected areas, enabling aid actors to deliver life-saving assistance and support early recovery efforts.
As the situation evolves, Basmeh & Zeitooneh will continue to respond to the needs of displaced families and host communities, advocating for their protection, dignity, and right to safe living conditions.
